150 year-old historic Church in Amsterdam in flames on New Year’s Day

A devastating fire tore through one of Amsterdam’s most recognizable historic landmarks in the early hours of January 1, 2026, leaving a beloved church largely destroyed and the city reeling as it welcomed the new year.

According to reporting by The New York Times, the blaze erupted shortly after midnight at the Vondelkerk, a neo-Gothic structure near Vondelpark, and rapidly engulfed the building before firefighters could bring it under control.

The Vondelkerk, constructed in 1872 and designed by famed Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, had long stood as a symbol of Amsterdam’s architectural and cultural heritage.

Originally consecrated as the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, it had been deconsecrated decades ago and repurposed for cultural events, offices, and community gatherings. Despite its secular use, the building remained a treasured historical site for residents and visitors alike.

Firefighters battled the intense blaze for hours as flames consumed the wooden roof and interior. The church’s towering spire — a defining feature of the skyline — ultimately collapsed into the structure, signaling the scale of destruction.

One nearby resident described the scene with visible distress, saying, “Well, I got an alert there was a fire in the neighborhood and we looked outside and saw the tip of the top of the church roof, and slowly we saw everything being destroyed and burning. It’s really horrible when you see such a beautiful building burning.”

By morning, emergency crews had managed to contain the fire, but officials confirmed that most of the structure had been gutted. Only portions of the exterior walls remained standing.

Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries linked directly to the church fire, though the cause was still under investigation. Fireworks — widely used during New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Netherlands — were being examined as a possible contributing factor.

The destruction of the Vondelkerk unfolded amid a turbulent New Year’s Eve across the country. Dutch police and emergency services reported widespread disorder, with fireworks-related incidents, attacks on first responders, and hundreds of arrests nationwide.

Officials described the night as unusually violent, adding urgency to ongoing debates over public safety and fireworks regulations.

Elsewhere in the Netherlands, fireworks accidents claimed multiple lives and left scores injured, further casting a shadow over the celebrations.

These incidents occurred just ahead of a planned nationwide ban on consumer fireworks sales — a measure supported by emergency workers and public officials who cite years of injuries, fires, and property damage tied to the tradition.
