Trump warns China to halt military pressure on Taiwan, saying Beijing’s actions and rhetoric are raising unnecessary tensions

In a firm diplomatic message issued at the start of the new year, the Trump administration publicly warned China to halt its escalating military pressure on Taiwan, underscoring growing concern in Washington about rising instability in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to reporting by Newsweek, the U.S. State Department released a New Year’s Day statement condemning Beijing’s recent military actions, emphasizing that such behavior risks provoking broader conflict.

The department urged China to “exercise restraint, cease its military pressure against Taiwan, and instead engage in meaningful dialogue.” It reaffirmed long-standing U.S. policy supporting peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and opposing “unilateral changes to the status quo, including by force or coercion.”

Central to the warning were China’s recent large-scale military exercises, known as “Justice Mission 2025,” which simulated blockades of Taiwan’s major ports.

These drills reportedly involved fighter aircraft, naval vessels, and coast guard units, and included live-fire components that Taiwanese officials said brought munitions closer to the island than in previous exercises.

Beijing maintains that Taiwan is a breakaway province that must eventually be unified with the mainland, despite the island operating as a self-governing democracy with its own military, constitution, and elected leadership. Critics argue the expanding scale and frequency of these drills signal a shift from symbolic pressure to active military intimidation.

The U.S. warning followed Washington’s approval of a major arms package for Taiwan valued at approximately $11 billion, aimed at bolstering the island’s defensive capabilities.

The State Department stressed that China’s military posture and increasingly aggressive rhetoric “increase tensions unnecessarily” and undermine regional stability.

While the United States continues to adhere to its policy of strategic ambiguity, officials have repeatedly emphasized that support for Taiwan’s self-defense is essential to deterring coercion and preserving peace in the region.

China’s leadership has defended its actions as a response to what it calls separatist movements within Taiwan and foreign interference, particularly from the United States.

President Xi Jinping has repeatedly asserted that reunification with Taiwan is inevitable, describing it as a historical mission that is “unstoppable.”

U.S. intelligence assessments, however, have raised alarms that Xi has instructed the People’s Liberation Army to be prepared for potential military action against Taiwan by 2027. These simultaneous messages of preparation and ideological resolve have intensified concerns in Washington and among U.S. allies.
