Authorities in Guatemala have launched a sweeping security crackdown after a wave of coordinated prison riots and deadly attacks left multiple police officers dead, prompting President Bernardo Arévalo to declare a nationwide state of emergency.
Coordinated Prison Uprisings Spark Crisis
The crisis began when inmates at three separate prison facilities simultaneously took dozens of guards hostage, in what officials described as a highly coordinated operation. Authorities believe the uprisings were carried out in response to government efforts to strip privileges from powerful criminal leaders operating inside the prison system.
Security forces later regained control of the facilities and safely freed the hostages. However, the situation escalated dramatically beyond prison walls.
Deadly Retaliation Against Police
On Sunday, at least eight police officers were killed in targeted attacks across the country. Officials say the killings were deliberate acts of retaliation by organized criminal groups attempting to pressure the government into backing down.
