Kohl’s Announces Changes to Store Locations

Kohl’s framed its decision to close 27 underperforming stores as a way to strengthen the business, concentrating resources where demand remained healthier. Locations in states including California, Texas, Illinois, and Georgia were among those affected. The strategy was straightforward: reduce weaker parts of the footprint while supporting stronger stores and online shopping. For workers facing disruption and customers losing a familiar destination, however, the consequences reached well beyond the company’s balance sheet.

At the time of the announcement, the planned leadership transition from Tom Kingsbury to former Michaels chief Ashley Buchanan added another dimension to the reset. Redesigned layouts, broader merchandise offerings, and digital convenience were part of the larger push to remain relevant. But a smaller footprint alone could not guarantee a turnaround. For a department store founded in 1962, the challenge was preserving the loyalty that made it familiar while giving shoppers compelling reasons to return.
