A Fourth of July Celebration Turns Into a Tragic Search
What began as a holiday trip filled with friendship, boating, and Independence Day celebrations ended in tragedy after 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells disappeared during a visit to Horn Island, Mississippi.
Wells traveled to the island on Saturday, July 4, 2026, with friends who were spending the holiday together. The group’s plans were centered around enjoying the holiday weekend outdoors, spending time near the water, and celebrating with others.
At some point during the outing, however, Wells became separated from the group. When his friends returned from the island, he was not with them, leading to immediate concern among those who knew him.
As the hours passed without contact, Wells’ family became increasingly worried. Around midnight, his mother contacted authorities and reported him missing. That call marked the beginning of a large-scale search operation involving multiple agencies across land and water.
The disappearance quickly drew attention from local residents, friends, and community members who hoped Wells would be found safe.
Authorities Begin Search for Missing Teenager
On July 5, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department released information about Wells as officials worked to locate him.
Authorities described him as a Black male approximately six feet one inch tall and weighing around 180 pounds. At the time he was last seen, officials said he was wearing blue swim trunks and sunglasses and was not wearing a shirt.
Investigators later corrected an earlier description that stated he had been wearing black swim trunks. Officials also said they had received a photograph of Wells taken on Horn Island before his disappearance. The image became one of the last confirmed photographs showing him before the search began.
Law enforcement established a command center at the Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. From there, emergency personnel coordinated search efforts involving several organizations.
The search included assistance from:

- Gulf Islands National Seashore personnel
- The U.S. Park Service
- The U.S. Coast Guard
- The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources
- The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks
Teams searched areas around Horn Island and nearby waters as officials worked to determine what happened after Wells became separated from his friends.
A Multi-Agency Operation Across Land and Water
The geography of Horn Island presented challenges for search teams. Located off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the barrier island is surrounded by open water and requires specialized resources for large-scale searches.
Officials used boats, aircraft, and personnel on the ground as they examined different areas of the island and surrounding coastline.
By Monday morning, July 6, crews returned to continue the operation. Reports indicated that aircraft from the United Cajun Navy were deployed shortly before 6 a.m., while search boats left the launch area before 8 a.m.
For Wells’ family and friends, each passing hour brought uncertainty as they waited for news.
The search remained focused on finding answers and bringing Wells home.
Discovery on Horn Island
The search effort took a heartbreaking turn later that morning.
At approximately 8:45 a.m., Sheriff Ledbetter announced that authorities had received information about a body discovered by a U.S. Park Ranger near the northwestern area of Horn Island.
Officials contacted Wells’ family and asked them to meet at the Lake Mars Boat Launch. There, they met with Sheriff Ledbetter and Coroner Bruce Lynd.
Later that morning, family members were taken to the coroner’s office in Pascagoula to identify the person found on the island.
Coroner Bruce Lynd told local media that there was no immediate reason to believe the person discovered was anyone other than Wells, although he explained that official confirmation would depend on additional procedures, including DNA testing.
An autopsy was also scheduled as part of the official investigation.
Before authorities completed all formal processes, Wells’ family shared the devastating news publicly. Shortly before 1 p.m., they confirmed through social media that the person found on Horn Island was Nolan.
The announcement brought grief to friends, teammates, classmates, and community members who had been following the search.
